Device for data transfer between PLCs, databases and the cloud – SIA Connect HW

Device for data transfer between PLCs, databases and the cloud – SIA Connect HW

Who is the device intended for?

  • Manufacturing plants – data collection from machines with storage to a database for subsequent reporting and monitoring, without the need to install a PC with Windows OS.
  • System integrators – easy integration of data between different PLCs and devices, with the option to store data in a database and enterprise IT applications.
  • Machine builders (OEMs) – a cost-effective and reliable solution for collecting data from machines worldwide (condition monitoring, reports, etc.).
  • Building and energy management (BMS) – data collection from building technologies (heating, cooling, ventilation, energy metering) and transfer to central systems for monitoring and reporting.
  • Projects with devices from different manufacturers and protocols – integration of data between devices that do not normally communicate, including device-to-device communication.
  • Companies that need to collect data and don’t want to pay recurring SW license rental fees – SIA Connect HW is a one-time investment with no subscription.

This HW variant is not intended for projects with a large number of collected values (more than 500), with custom hardware, or with virtualization—for these cases, the SIA Connect software version is intended.

Why choose SIA Connect HW?

  • All-in-one solution – a single device reads data from PLCs, stores it in databases, sends it to the cloud, and interconnects devices (PLCs, etc.).
  • Bidirectional data transfer – reads data from devices and writes data back.
  • Integration of devices from different manufacturers and protocols – supports more than 30 industrial protocols, enabling data integration across vendors.
  • Easy deployment – compact device for control cabinets; no need to install an additional Windows-based PC in production; configuration via a built-in web interface without complex programming.
  • Reliable data transfer – in case of a database/cloud connection outage, data is stored locally and automatically sent after reconnection.
  • Security and access management – encrypted communication (TLS), certificate management (e.g., DigiCert IoT Trust), and user role control.

Key Features

  • Complete HW + SW solution in one
  • Reads / writes up to 500 values
  • Configuration via built-in web interface
  • Functions as both an OPC UA server and client for standardized OT/IT communication
  • Bidirectional data transfer (OT ↔ IT, reading and writing values/parameters)
  • Local data buffering and delivery during communication outages (store-and-forward)
  • Encrypted communication (TLS) + certificates + user roles
  • Industrial design for DIN-rail mounting in control cabinets
  • Option to add a custom logo on the device for larger order quantities
  • 2× isolated LAN ports for connection to OT/IT systems
  • 1× RS232 and 1× RS485 serial interface for data collection from devices

SIA Connect HW is a compact industrial module for collecting data from devices (PLCs, machines, measuring instruments, and building management systems), storing it in databases, and transferring it to the cloud. It is used wherever there is a need to quickly unify data from devices of different manufacturers and using different protocols (supports 30+ industrial protocols). Data transferred to IT systems (databases, APIs, MQTT) is available for monitoring, reporting, analysis, and visualization. It also enables communication between different connected systems (for example, linking data between Siemens S7 PLCs and Allen-Bradley PLCs, or reading values from an energy meter and writing them into a PLC, etc.).

This hardware variant allows reading up to 500 values from one or multiple connected devices on an Ethernet network (temperatures, consumption values, states, number of produced pieces, OK/NOK parts, and other variables). If 500 values are not sufficient and you need to read more data, choose the SIA Connect software variant.

The device can be deployed very quickly: simply mount it on a DIN rail in a control cabinet, connect it to the Ethernet network (2× isolated LAN ports), and configure it via the built-in web interface. This eliminates the need for a dedicated Windows-based PC in production used solely for data collection, including operating system installation and user rights management.

In the event of a connection failure, data is stored locally and automatically sent once the connection is restored (store-and-forward). In practice, this means that data is not lost even during a temporary interruption of the connection to the database or the cloud.

Connection to industrial devices via 2× LAN ports and 1× RS232 and 1× RS485 serial interface

    SIA Connect HW – 2x LAN ports + 1x RS232 and 1x RS485

SIA Connect offers a library of more than 30 connectors for data collection from a wide range of industrial devices and technologies (PLCs, machines, sensors and measuring instruments, BMS). It supports common platforms and protocols such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, Omron, Beckhoff, Modbus, OPC UA, BACnet, and Ethernet/IP (including support for Universal Robots). This enables fast integration of the manufacturing (OT) layer with IT and access to data in a unified format without the need to combine multiple gateways and partial integrations.

Deployment is practical even in heterogeneous environments: data can be collected from multiple sources simultaneously and then forwarded to IT systems or used for communication between devices from different manufacturers.

Connection to databases and cloud services

Collected data can be forwarded to common databases and cloud services using available connectors (e.g. SQL, MQTT, REST API, and others depending on the selected configuration). Data transfer can be bidirectional – in addition to sending data to IT systems, supported scenarios also allow selected values to be written back to devices (e.g. parameters or setpoints). The direction and flow of data are defined using mapping, which determines the relationship between the source and target data points.

    Open REST API

An open REST API is included for integrating SIA Connect into custom applications and enterprise processes. It allows data to be read and connected to internal services or automations without relying solely on databases and cloud connectors. The API can also be used to create a custom user interface or to integrate SIA Connect into existing tools.

Compact and practical design for control cabinets

    SIA Connect HW – device

The HW variant combines hardware and software in a single device designed for installation in a control cabinet. It is suitable for projects where you want data collection and transfer handled by a dedicated device, without an additional “collector” PC in production and without the associated operating system management.

A local web interface is included for management and monitoring of the running operation, allowing configuration and service tasks to be performed via a standard web browser. This makes deployment and maintenance simpler and more predictable—especially in environments where long-term stability and operational management are critical.

For more extensive scenarios (a higher number of collected values/items, a requirement for custom hardware, or virtualization), the SIA Connect software version is available.
