PROFIBUS Repeaters and Multi-Repeaters

A more robust PROFIBUS network

PROFIBUS Repeaters and Multi-Repeaters

Repeaters and multi-repeaters amplify and regenerate the communication signal, galvanically isolate individual segments and divide a PROFIBUS network into clearer, more resilient branches. Our range includes compact repeaters, ProfiHub multi-repeaters, IP65 outdoor versions, fibre-optic couplers and devices for changing communication speeds.

  • Greater communication robustness
  • Galvanic isolation of segments
  • Star and tree topologies
  • Installation without PLC program changes
ProfiHub B5 – multi-repeater for dividing a PROFIBUS network into multiple segments
How does a repeater work and which type should you choose?

Choose a device according to the number of segments and the application

2 segments

Standard PROFIBUS repeater

A simple solution for dividing one segment into two galvanically isolated sections. The repeater regenerates the signal and prevents a fault or short circuit in one segment from affecting the other part of the network.

  • extension of the cable route,
  • connection of additional PROFIBUS stations,
  • isolation of a problematic part of the network,
  • also suitable as a diagnostic measuring point.
Multiple branches

ProfiHub multi-repeaters

A ProfiHub divides the network into several independent, galvanically isolated segments. It enables star or tree topologies and reduces the number of devices connected to one long branch.

  • versions with two or five segments,
  • separate termination for each segment,
  • LED communication diagnostics,
  • IP20 and industrial IP65 versions.
Fibre-optic connection

Fibre-optic PROFIBUS couplers

Fibre-optic versions connect distant parts of the network using optical fibre. They are suitable for long distances, environments with strong electromagnetic interference or galvanic isolation between separate buildings and production areas.

  • greater resistance to electromagnetic interference,
  • connection of distant segments,
  • versions for star topologies and optical rings,
  • combination of copper and fibre-optic branches.
Changing the speed

ProfiSwitch X5

This special multi-repeater allows a different transmission speed to be set for each segment. It is useful when the main PROFIBUS master communicates at high speed but distant or older devices require slower communication.

  • up to five independent channels,
  • lower speed for longer cable routes,
  • connection of devices with limited communication speed,
  • greater resilience of problematic segments.

When do we recommend using a repeater or multi-repeater?

You need to extend a PROFIBUS cable route
There are too many devices in one segment
You want to isolate a problematic part of a production line
The network is sensitive to interference or short circuits
You need to create a star topology
You are modernising an older network without changing the PLC program
Not sure which type is right?
The number of stations, transmission speed, cable length, required number of branches, installation environment and possible need for fibre-optic connection are important when choosing a device. Send us the network topology or book a short technical consultation.

PROFIBUS: 3 Sins and 10 Tips

PROFIBUS: 3 Sins and 10 Tips

The PROFIBUS industrial bus is highly tolerant and will forgive many faults. But if a critical fault occurs—or several small ones accumulate—you will definitely notice. That’s why this aging industrial network deserves attention. Even if faults on your network are still rare, they will gradually accumulate. What do our technicians recommend? What are their 10 tips for maintaining PROFIBUS?

How to improve the PROFIBUS network with the ProfiHub multirepeater?

The rules for building PROFIBUS DP networks state that a maximum of 32 PROFIBUS DP stations can be connected to one segment. The second limitation is the length of the segment cabling, which is inversely proportional to the speed of the PROFIBUS network used. In addition to these rules, there is another rule of thumb that says that 32 stations in one segment means de facto 32 potential points of failure. Each PROFIBUS device has an impact on the quality of the network by its connection to the network. Therefore, reduce the number of PROFIBUS devices in a PROFIBUS segment to a lower number by using ProfiHub repeaters or multirepeaters. The result will be a maximally reinforced, reliable, functional and robust PROFIBUS network that will not be brought down by anything.

Unlike competitive products, PROCENTEC repeaters and multirepeaters have better results in galvanic separation of segments and also digitally smooth the messages between segments. An error in one segment will not move to the other segment, which unfortunately cannot be claimed 100% for all repeaters on the market. If you want quality repeaters and multirepeaters, choose PROCENTEC products.

ComBricks – permanent PROFIBUS Diagnostics via Ethernet

ComBricks – permanent PROFIBUS Diagnostics via Ethernet

ComBricks is a unique solution that features user-friendly remote monitoring of PROFIBUS networks and thus provides you with an overview of their health. As part of prevention, ComBricks will alert you by email if any of these problems occur on your PROFIBUS network – repeats, lost stations, slaves requesting diagnostics, etc. All problems are saved to the internal memory and can then be reviewed via a web browser.

ComBricks doesn't require any special software installations on your PC. You only need to type your ComBricks' IP address into a web browser.
