Active Terminator for PROFIBUS network / segment

Stable termination of PROFIBUS DP networks

T1 Active PROFIBUS Terminator

The T1 active terminator terminates the end of a PROFIBUS DP segment independently of the power supply of the final station. The last device can therefore be switched off, disconnected or replaced without removing the correct bus termination. The integrated DB9 port also creates an easily accessible measuring point for diagnostics.

  • Independent active termination
  • Two redundant power inputs
  • DB9 measuring and service port
  • Speeds from 9.6 kbit/s to 12 Mbit/s
  • DIN-rail mounting
Anybus T1 active terminator for a PROFIBUS DP segment
1 The final station can be switched off Termination remains active because the T1 has its own power supply.
2 Higher operational reliability Two power inputs allow a redundant power supply.
3 Easy segment diagnostics Connect a tester through DB9 without disconnecting the cabling.
How does active termination work and when is it useful?

Difference between connector termination and an active terminator

Standard solution

Termination in the station connector

At the end of most segments, the resistor in the PROFIBUS connector of the final station is switched on. Correct termination, however, depends on that station remaining powered.

  • simple and low-cost solution,
  • suitable for permanently powered end stations,
  • termination may stop working after the station is switched off,
  • disconnecting the device can disrupt the complete segment.
More robust solution

Separate T1 active terminator

The T1 has its own power supply and is installed as a separate component at the physical end of the segment. Termination is therefore independent of the final station.

  • stable termination even when the station is switched off,
  • allows replacement of the final device,
  • redundant power supply for greater availability,
  • separate DB9 diagnostic port.
1 Installation at the end of the segment

The T1 is installed at the actual physical end of the PROFIBUS DP cable segment and the A and B conductors and shield are connected.

2 Independent power supply

The terminator is powered by its own 24 V DC supply. The second input can be used for redundant power.

3 Permanent bus termination

Correct electrical termination remains in place regardless of the state of the final PROFIBUS station.

When do we recommend active termination?

The final station is switched off regularly
The end device is serviced or replaced frequently
A PLC or remote I/O is installed at the end of the segment
The segment operates at a high transmission speed
The production or safety network is important
A permanently accessible measuring point is required
The network is long or sensitive to signal quality
You want to improve the robustness of an older segment
A segment failure would cause costly downtime

Main features of the T1 active terminator

Active termination for PROFIBUS DP / RS-485
Speeds from 9.6 kbit/s to 12 Mbit/s
Two 19–28 V DC power inputs
Automatic use of the available power supply
LED indication for both power inputs
Integrated 9-pin DB9 port
Bus connection through screw terminals
Mounting on a standard DIN rail
Industrial IP20 design
DB9 as a measuring point

A ProfiTrace 2 tester, for example, can be connected to the integrated port. The technician can measure communication and signal quality directly at the physical end of the segment.

DB9 as the bus connection

Depending on the installation, the DB9 connector can also be used as the main PROFIBUS cable connection. Removable screw terminals are the second option.

The active terminator must remain powered:
The T1 removes the dependency of termination on the final station, but its own power supply must be reliable. For important networks, we therefore recommend using both power inputs from independent circuits or a suitably backed-up 24 V supply.
Not sure whether you need active termination?
Send us a simple network diagram, transmission speed, the positions of the first and final devices and information about which stations are switched off. We will assess the current termination and recommend a suitable location for the T1.

PROFIBUS: 3 Sins and 10 Tips

The PROFIBUS industrial bus is highly tolerant and will forgive many faults. But if a critical fault occurs—or several small ones accumulate—you will definitely notice. That’s why this aging industrial network deserves attention. Even if faults on your network are still rare, they will gradually accumulate. What do our technicians recommend? What are their 10 tips for maintaining PROFIBUS?
