Can a newer S7-400 CPU be used as a direct replacement?

Sometimes, but the hardware and firmware compatibility, memory card, communication interfaces, rack configuration and support in the specific STEP 7 project version must always be verified first. The CPU 414, 416 or 417 designation alone is not sufficient to determine a safe replacement.
