One power supply for the motherboard and other PC components

The MP1S-5300V-B1 converts 90–264 VAC mains voltage into all standard power rails required by a PC system. This means there is no need to use several separate power supplies for the motherboard, processor, storage devices and other components.

The total output power is up to 300 W. The main +12 V rail provides up to 24 A, and the individual outputs do not require a minimum load. The power supply is therefore suitable for compact medical and professional PC systems where standard PC power is required in a design intended for integration into equipment.

300 W for the complete PC system

One power supply can power the motherboard, processor, storage devices and other components. The limits of the individual power rails must also be taken into account when designing the system.

Standard PC voltages

+3.3 V, +5 V, +12 V, −12 V and +5 Vsb standby rails are available, so there is no need to generate the individual voltages using additional converters.

For 90–264 VAC mains

The wide input voltage range allows the same power supply to be used in devices intended for different countries and mains systems.

Output voltages and available currents

When choosing a PC power supply, the total 300 W rating is not the only value that matters. You also need to check the current required by the processor, motherboard and other components on each individual power rail.

Output voltage Maximum current
+3.3 VDC 17 A
+5 VDC 18 A
+12 VDC 24 A
−12 VDC 0.3 A
+5 Vsb 2.5 A
Also take the combined limits into account when designing the system. The maximum total output power is 300 W, while the +3.3 V and +5 V rails can provide a combined maximum of 120 W. The maximum current of all rails therefore cannot be drawn simultaneously at full load.

A suitable foundation for a medical PC system

For a medical device, using a standard PC power supply simply because it has the required power and connectors is not enough. The power supply section must meet higher requirements for electrical safety and insulation.

The MP1S-5300V-B1 complies with IEC/EN 60601-1 3rd Edition and UL 60601-1 3rd Edition. Between the mains input and the outputs, it provides 4000 VAC insulation corresponding to 2× MOPP, while the leakage current is below 300 µA at both 115 VAC and 230 VAC.

This makes the power supply a suitable building block for medical PCs and other devices where patient protection and leakage current limits need to be considered from the design stage.

IEC/EN 60601-1

The power supply is designed for use in medical electrical equipment and complies with the relevant requirements of IEC/EN 60601-1.

2× MOPP

The 4000 VAC insulation between the mains input and the outputs provides two means of patient protection between the mains supply and the powered electronics.

Leakage current <300 µA

The low leakage current makes it easier to design equipment where the total leakage current of the entire medical system must be kept under control.

Safety of the final device

A certified power supply simplifies the design, but does not replace assessment of the complete device

The MP1S-5300V-B1 is a component intended for integration into the final product. Using a medical-grade power supply helps meet the requirements for the power section of the device, but the final equipment must still be assessed as a complete system.

Designed for integration

The power supply must be installed inside a suitable metal enclosure and is not intended for standalone operation outside the final device.

EMC of the final device

After installation, the electromagnetic compatibility of the complete device must be verified in its actual configuration.

Safety of the complete system

In addition to the power supply itself, the mechanical design, protective grounding, wiring and other parts of the final device must also be assessed.

Lower mains load and reduced noise during normal operation

The MP1S-5300V-B1 uses active PFC to improve the way current is drawn from the mains and reduce unnecessary loading of the power infrastructure. This is particularly useful in professional systems where several power supplies may be used within one device or installation.

Efficiency reaches 80–84% at full load. Part of the input power is therefore converted into heat, which is removed by the integrated fan. Its speed is regulated according to operating conditions, so it does not have to run continuously at maximum speed and the power supply can operate more quietly under lower thermal load.

Active PFC

Helps improve the way the power supply draws current from the mains and reduces unnecessary loading of the power infrastructure.

80–84% efficiency

Higher efficiency means a smaller share of the input power is converted into waste heat inside the device.

Fan speed as needed

Fan speed control adapts the cooling performance to current operating conditions and helps reduce unnecessary fan noise.

Standard PC cabling simplifies integration

The power supply uses standard connectors for the motherboard, processor power, PCI Express card and storage devices. When designing a custom medical PC, there is therefore no need to create a special wiring harness for the individual power rails.

Motherboard and processor

20+4-pin ATX/EPS connector for the motherboard and 4+4-pin P4/EPS connector for the processor power supply.

Expansion cards

The 6+2-pin PCI Express connector allows a compatible expansion card to be powered directly from the power supply.

Storage and peripherals

Four SATA connectors are supplemented by HDD and FDD power connectors, allowing several internal devices to be connected without an additional power supply.

Short power interruptions do not necessarily restart the computer immediately

The power supply can bridge a very short loss of input voltage. The hold-up time is greater than 16 ms, so a very brief voltage dip or interruption does not necessarily result in an immediate drop in the output voltages.

The Power Good signal also informs the motherboard whether the supply voltages are within the required range. After power-up, it is activated with a delay of 100–500 ms, and when the correct power conditions are lost, the specified switch-off delay is 1 ms.

This is not a substitute for a UPS. The hold-up time only bridges very short interruptions in the millisecond range. If the computer needs to continue operating or shut down safely during a longer power failure, a separate UPS is required.

Built-in protections help limit the effects of faults

If a short circuit, overload or excessive output value occurs, the integrated protection functions help prevent prolonged operation outside the permitted conditions.

Output short circuit

In the event of a short circuit, the power supply either switches off the affected output or automatically resumes operation after the fault is removed, depending on the particular power rail.

Overload

If the permitted load is exceeded to approximately 110–160%, the power supply switches off to prevent prolonged operation beyond its rated capability.

Overvoltage and overcurrent

The main +3.3 V, +5 V and +12 V rails are protected against exceeding defined voltage and current limits.
