Kepware Server 7.0: One Platform Instead of Two, Higher Security, and the End of OPC .NET

Kepware Server 7.0.236.0 unifies the former KEPServerEX and ThingWorx Kepware Server into a single product. It introduces security changes, adds support for Windows Server 2025, and removes legacy technologies present in the previous products. Below is an overview of what’s new and what has changed so you can upgrade smoothly.
Quick Summary of Changes
- This is a new major release.
- Consolidation: KEPServerEX + ThingWorx Kepware Server → Kepware Server.
- Security upgrade: certificates now use a 2048-bit key (OPC UA, MQTT, REST API, IEC 61850).
- OPC .NET has been removed (no longer supported).
Proceed with the upgrade only after testing (ideally outside production first).
Product Unification
Starting with version 7.x, the product is branded as Kepware Server. During the upgrade, the instance name changes, which may affect external applications, scripts, and client connections. In our online shop, we will also gradually switch individual drivers to the new name.
Installation and Migration
The installer supports migration of existing projects from earlier versions. It is recommended to back up your configuration and to test the upgrade in a non-production environment first.
Migration guide to the new version
Security Changes
Certificates for OPC UA, MQTT, REST API, and IEC 61850 are now generated with a 2048-bit key. After upgrading, you must re-establish certificate trust on the client side, otherwise communication may be interrupted.
Operating System Support
Windows Server 2025 is now supported. Windows Server 2012 is no longer supported.
Interface Changes
- OPC UA: new certificates and a higher security standard.
- OPC DA: stability fixes for a high number of groups.
- OPC .NET: the interface has been removed and is no longer supported.
Driver and Plug-In Changes
- Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Ethernet: expanded support for FW 35–37, improved device identity loading, expanded time data types.
- Advanced Tags Plug-in: fixes when working with Link Tags and arrays.
Summary of Additional Fixes and Minor Changes
This version also includes a range of smaller fixes and optimizations across drivers and interfaces, especially:
- Stability and error-state fixes in less commonly used drivers
- Behavior corrections in specific communication scenarios
- Internal changes with no direct impact on typical configurations
These changes usually do not require configuration changes and generally have a positive impact on system stability.
