The W&T USB Server Megabit 2.0 53665 connects USB peripherals to a computer via 100 Mbit/s Ethernet. It has two USB 2.0 ports and, using the USB Redirector, makes the connected device accessible in Windows or Linux as a local USB peripheral.

Usage

The Megabit model is primarily intended for USB licence keys, printers, scanners and measuring devices. USB devices can be located at the point of use or in the server room and accessed from a computer or virtual machine connected to the network.

Communication and functions

Supported USB transfer modes include Control, Bulk, Interrupt and Isochronous. Up to eight USB devices can be connected using an external USB hub.
Each of the two USB ports can be connected to a different computer. At any given time, a specific USB device is used by the computer to which it is assigned.
The USB Redirector supports automatic connection without user login and script-based control. Network communication supports routing and DNS.
For cameras, audio and data storage, W&T recommends the Gigabit 53663 model. The USB speed of 480 Mbit/s is not the throughput of the Ethernet connection on the 53665 model.

Commissioning and accessories

Connect the device to an Ethernet connection and a PoE or 24–48 V DC power supply. Use WuTility or DHCP to configure the network, and install the appropriate USB Redirector and the driver for the USB peripheral itself on your computer. When installing alongside other devices, maintain spacing appropriate to the operating conditions.

Do I need any additional software on my computer?

Yes. The W&T USB Redirector enables USB devices to be connected via the network on supported versions of Windows or Linux. The driver for the connected peripheral is still required.

Can two computers use a single USB device at the same time?

Each USB device is assigned to a single computer. The first computer can be connected to USB1 and the second to USB2 at the same time.

Is this model suitable for a high-speed camera or a USB drive?

For cameras, audio and storage, the manufacturer recommends the Gigabit 53663 model. Both the data rate and the requirements of the specific application are important factors in the selection process.
