DC/DC converter and UPS in one device
The DC2412-UPSD is designed for applications where a 24 VDC power supply is available, but the connected device requires a stable 12 VDC supply and short power interruptions must also be bridged. The converter operates with a wide input voltage range of 16–32 VDC and provides a regulated 12 VDC ±2% output at up to 5 A.
During normal operation, the electronics supply power to the connected device while charging the integrated supercapacitors. If the input voltage falls below the defined threshold or fails completely, the stored energy takes over the output power supply.
The wide input voltage range allows use in standard 24 VDC industrial power systems. The output remains regulated at 12 VDC.
Energy is stored in supercapacitors. They do not require regular battery replacement and are suitable for applications with frequent short power interruptions.
The integrated electronics monitor the power supply, supercapacitor charge level and operating states. RS232, a Power Fail relay and a Reboot function are available.

Supercapacitors: ready for frequent short power interruptions
The DC2412-UPSD uses supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors or EDLCs, for energy storage. Compared with conventional batteries, they offer very fast charging and a high number of repeated charge and discharge cycles. The manufacturer specifies a service life of more than 500,000 cycles.
Supercapacitors are therefore particularly suitable for applications with frequent short power interruptions, voltage dips or fluctuations. During a power failure, the DC2412-UPSD can maintain power to a 12 VDC device or provide enough time for the safe shutdown of an industrial computer. For long-term backup operation, a battery-based UPS is more suitable.
The integrated electronics continuously control the charging and discharging of the supercapacitors. At low load, they can recharge more quickly, while at higher loads, supplying the connected device takes priority.

How long will the device continue operating during a power failure?
The backup time mainly depends on the power consumption of the connected device. The manufacturer's curve shows the backup time of the DC2412-UPSD depending on output power at +25 °C and the nominal capacitance of the supercapacitors. The lower the load, the longer the UPS can maintain the 12 VDC output.
The values in the graph are indicative and are not guaranteed backup times. The actual duration is affected by the load, the condition and charge level of the supercapacitors and the operating temperature. If the UPS is intended to allow an industrial computer or another system to shut down safely during a power failure, sufficient time reserve should be provided and the entire available energy of the supercapacitors should not be used.
Fast charging and intelligent distribution of available power
The DC2412-UPSD uses a control method known as Power Sharing. The available power from the input power supply is divided between the connected load and charging the supercapacitors. Supplying the connected device has priority, while the remaining power is used to recharge the energy storage.
At low load, more current is available for charging and the supercapacitors recharge more quickly. The manufacturer specifies a charging time of less than 60 seconds at maximum charging current. The manual also states that without a load, charging takes less than 60 seconds, while at full load it may take approximately 2.5 minutes.
After a power interruption, the supercapacitors can be recharged significantly faster than a conventional battery.
At higher loads, a greater proportion of the available power is used for the load, leaving less energy available for charging.
According to the manufacturer, the DC/DC converter achieves a typical efficiency of 94%, making it suitable for continuous operation in control cabinets.
UPS status and configuration with UPScom software
The DC2412-UPSD supports UPScom software for Windows and Linux. Via the RS232 serial interface, the UPS operating status can be monitored, power failures can be handled and system behaviour during an outage can be configured.
The integrated intelligent module continuously monitors operating data and transmits it to the connected computer. Via the RS232 communication protocol, values such as input and output voltage, input and charging current, supercapacitor voltage, capacitance and charging system status can be read.
- monitoring of input and output voltage,
- monitoring of supercapacitor charging and status,
- configuration of the response to a power failure,
- configuration of shutdown timing,
- control of safe shutdown of the connected computer,
- support for automatic restart after power is restored.

Safe shutdown and automatic restart of the computer
In the event of an input power failure, the DC2412-UPSD can notify the connected computer or another host system and provide enough time for a controlled shutdown. Both the delay before shutdown is triggered and the time required for the shutdown process itself can be configured.
Once input power is restored, the integrated Reboot function can be used. It allows the system to restart after shutdown has been completed. For an industrial computer, this function also needs to be coordinated with the BIOS and operating system settings.
The connection can be implemented via RS232 or the PBR output, which can simulate pressing the Power button on the computer motherboard. A relay contact for Power Fail status signalling is also available.

Power failure and system shutdown control
Practical functions for real-world operation
The DC2412-UPSD can either bridge a short power interruption or, depending on the configuration, initiate a controlled shutdown of the connected system. Basic behaviour can be configured using DIP switches, allowing selected functions to operate even without the UPScom software running.
The DIP switches can be used to configure how long the UPS should wait after a power failure before initiating shutdown. Available times are 3, 8, 20, 40, 60, 100 and 150 seconds, or control can be handled through software.
Optionally, the output can be enabled only once the supercapacitors have reached 90% of their capacity. This ensures that the system has sufficient energy reserve available after startup in case another power failure occurs.
Basic timing can be configured directly using the DIP switches. The DC2412-UPSD can then trigger shutdown through the Shutdown or PBR signal even without active software on the connected computer.
Installation, cooling and protection functions
The DC2412-UPSD is designed for mounting on an EN 60715 DIN rail. For optimum natural cooling, the manufacturer recommends vertical installation on a horizontal DIN rail and sufficient airflow around the ventilation openings.
If the permitted output current is exceeded, the device switches off. Once the overload has been removed, it automatically returns to normal operation.
The input stage is protected against incorrect power supply polarity.
The device does not use a fan. During installation, it is therefore important not to obstruct the ventilation openings and to ensure unrestricted airflow.

Frequently asked questions about the Bicker DC2412-UPSD DC/DC converter and backup power supply
DC/DC conversion and uninterrupted power supply
What is the Bicker DC2412-UPSD?
The DC2412-UPSD is an industrial DC/DC converter and DC UPS in one device. It converts an input voltage of 16–32 VDC into a stable 12 VDC / 5 A output and, during a short input power failure, maintains the 12 VDC output using integrated supercapacitors. The maximum output power is 60 W.
Can the DC2412-UPSD convert 24 VDC to 12 VDC?
Yes. The nominal input voltage is 24 VDC, but the converter operates across a wide range of 16–32 VDC. At the output, it provides regulated 12 VDC ±2 % at a current of up to 5 A.
What is the difference between a standard DC/DC converter and the DC2412-UPSD?
A standard DC/DC converter only converts one DC voltage level to another. The DC2412-UPSD additionally includes supercapacitor energy storage and UPS control electronics. In the event of an input voltage failure or drop, it can therefore temporarily maintain the 12 VDC output and allow the connected device to continue operating or shut down safely.
Do I need a separate power supply upstream of the DC2412-UPSD?
Yes. The DC2412-UPSD has a DC input and is not intended for direct connection to a 230 VAC mains supply. It requires an external DC power supply in the range of 16–32 VDC, typically 24 VDC. It subsequently converts this input to 12 VDC while simultaneously providing uninterrupted power to the connected device.
Is the 12 VDC output stable even when the input voltage changes?
Yes. The DC2412-UPSD operates as a DC/DC converter and provides a regulated 12 VDC ±2 % output within the permitted 16–32 VDC input range. The connected 12 VDC device is therefore not directly affected by voltage changes in the 24 VDC supply branch.
Supercapacitors and backup time
Why does the DC2412-UPSD use supercapacitors instead of a battery?
Supercapacitors are particularly suitable for frequent short power failures. They recharge quickly, do not require regular battery replacement, and the manufacturer specifies a lifetime of more than 500,000 charge and discharge cycles. A battery UPS is more suitable for power supply lasting several minutes or hours during an extended outage.
What supercapacitors are used in the DC2412-UPSD?
The device uses four supercapacitors with a capacity of 100 F each. The nominal energy reserve is 1.8 kJ, of which the manufacturer specifies 1.1 kJ as usable energy.
How long can the DC2412-UPSD keep a device running during a power failure?
The backup time primarily depends on the actual output power of the connected device. At lower power consumption, it is significantly longer than with a load close to the maximum 60 W. Therefore, the manufacturer does not specify one fixed value, but provides a backup-time-versus-output-power curve at +25 °C.
If the UPS is intended to enable the safe shutdown of an industrial computer, shutdown must be configured with a sufficient margin before the supercapacitors are completely discharged.
How quickly do the supercapacitors recharge?
The charging time depends on the output load. Without a connected load, the manufacturer specifies a time of less than 60 seconds. At full load, charging may take approximately 2.5 minutes because a greater portion of the available power is used to supply the connected device.
Is the DC2412-UPSD suitable for frequent short power failures?
Yes. Frequent short power failures, voltage dips, or input voltage fluctuations are among the main applications of this device. The supercapacitors withstand a very high number of cycles and recharge quickly after a power failure.
Safe shutdown, Reboot, and power-failure control
Can the DC2412-UPSD safely shut down an industrial computer during a power failure?
Yes. In the event of a power failure, the DC2412-UPSD can provide the connected computer with Power Fail status information and give it time to save data and perform a controlled operating-system shutdown. Communication can take place via RS232, or the PBR output can be used to simulate pressing the Power button on the motherboard.
What is the Reboot function on the DC2412-UPSD?
The Reboot function enables the connected system to restart after a controlled shutdown if input power returns during or after shutdown. For an industrial computer, this function must also be coordinated with the BIOS and operating-system settings.
What is the Power Fail Timer and what is it used for?
The Power Fail Timer determines the time from the beginning of a power failure until the UPS initiates shutdown of the connected system. If input power is restored during this time, the system may not need to be shut down at all. DIP switches can be used to set 3, 8, 20, 40, 60, 100, or 150 seconds; the time can also be controlled through software.
What is the Shutdown Timer?
The Shutdown Timer determines how much time the connected system is given to complete a controlled shutdown after the shutdown signal is activated. The selected value must be long enough for the computer or other device to safely complete the required operations before the UPS output is disconnected.
What does output release only at 90 % supercapacitor charge mean?
The DC2412-UPSD can be configured to provide output voltage after power-on only when the supercapacitors reach 90 % of their capacity. The connected system therefore does not start with nearly empty energy storage and has sufficient energy for a safe shutdown in the event of another power failure.
UPScom, RS232, and signalling
Can the DC2412-UPSD be configured and monitored using software?
Yes. UPScom software for Windows and Linux is intended for current installations. RS232 can be used to monitor UPS operating data and configure the system's response to a power failure.
Is UPScom software required for the DC2412-UPSD?
No. Basic functions can operate without software. Power Fail timing and shutdown can be configured using DIP switches, and the shutdown signal can be passed directly to the connected system. UPScom is suitable where monitoring, communication with a computer, and more advanced control are required.
What data can be read from the DC2412-UPSD via RS232?
The communication protocol allows retrieval of, for example, input and output voltage, input current, charging current, supercapacitor storage voltage, individual supercapacitor voltages, capacity, ESR, and the operating status of the charging and monitoring system.
What is the Power Fail relay contact used for?
The relay contact allows power-failure information to be passed to an external device, such as a control system, industrial computer, or other signalling electronics. As a result, Power Fail status does not need to be evaluated solely through serial communication.
What does PBR mean on the DC2412-UPSD?
PBR is used to trigger a signal corresponding to pressing the Power button of the connected computer. The PBR+ and PBR− outputs can be connected to the motherboard's Power button input, enabling a controlled system shutdown during a power failure even without a software command via RS232.
What do the OUT and IN LEDs indicate?
Two LEDs on the front panel indicate the status of the input and output voltage. Vin_OK indicates input status, while Vout_OK indicates the presence of output voltage.
Installation and operating conditions
How is the DC2412-UPSD mounted?
The device is intended for mounting on a DIN rail according to EN 60715. For the best natural cooling, the manufacturer recommends vertical mounting on a horizontal DIN rail and sufficient airflow around the ventilation openings.
What is the operating temperature range of the DC2412-UPSD?
For the DC2412-UPSD, the manufacturer specifies an operating temperature of −20 to +65 °C and a storage temperature of −20 to +70 °C. Free airflow around the device must be ensured for proper cooling.
How does the DC2412-UPSD behave under overload?
The device has Non-LATCH overcurrent protection. In the event of an overload, the output is disconnected and operation automatically resumes once the overload is removed, provided the output current returns to the permitted range.
Does the DC2412-UPSD have reverse-polarity protection?
Yes. The manufacturer specifies active input reverse-polarity protection. Nevertheless, correct polarity and wiring according to the manual must be observed during installation.
Is the DC2412-UPSD suitable for outdoor installation?
The DC2412-UPSD is a DIN-rail module intended primarily for installation in a suitable control cabinet or protective enclosure. The manufacturer does not specify enhanced protection such as IP65 or IP67 for this model, so it cannot be installed directly outdoors without appropriate protection.
Selection and typical applications
What devices is the DC2412-UPSD suitable for?
It is suitable for 12 VDC devices with consumption up to 5 A and power up to 60 W, for example industrial computers, network and communication devices, control electronics, measuring equipment, or other sensitive devices powered from a 12 VDC branch.
When should I choose the DC2412-UPSD instead of a battery UPS?
The DC2412-UPSD is suitable where primarily frequent short power failures are expected and rapid readiness for the next cycle, long cycle life, and minimal maintenance are important. If a device needs to run for several minutes or longer during an outage, a UPS with a Li-Ion or LiFePO4 battery is usually more suitable.
Is the DC2412-UPSD suitable for an industrial computer?
Yes, if the computer operates on 12 VDC, its maximum consumption does not exceed 5 A, and the available supercapacitor backup time is sufficient for safe shutdown. Advantages include RS232 communication, Power Fail signalling, PBR for triggering shutdown, and automatic Reboot after power returns.
Is the DC2412-UPSD suitable as a replacement for a standard 24 V/12 V DC/DC converter?
Yes, if the application also requires short-term uninterrupted power. The DC2412-UPSD converts 16–32 VDC to stable 12 VDC / 5 A like a DC/DC converter, but it additionally includes supercapacitor energy storage and functions for power-failure management and safe shutdown of the connected system.
