DC/DC converter and UPS in a single device
The DC2412-UPSDP2 is designed for applications where a 24 VDC power supply is available, but the connected device requires 12 VDC and also needs protection against power failures, voltage drops or fluctuations. The converter operates with a wide input range of 16–32 VDC and provides up to 12 VDC / 5 A at the output.
During normal operation, the electronics power the connected device while simultaneously charging the integrated supercapacitors. If the input voltage drops below the defined threshold or fails completely, the energy stored in the supercapacitors takes over the output supply.
The wide input voltage range makes the device suitable for standard 24 VDC industrial power systems. The output provides up to 12 VDC / 5 A.
The integrated supercapacitors provide a total energy of 5.1 kJ / 1.4 Wh, of which approximately 3.8 kJ / 1.1 Wh is usable for backup operation.
The integrated electronics monitor the power supply and the state of the supercapacitors. RS232, a Power Fail relay, Reboot functionality and host operation without software are available.

Supercapacitors: ready for frequent power failures
The DC2412-UPSDP2 uses supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors or EDLCs, as its energy storage. Compared with conventional batteries, they offer fast charging, high cycle life and minimal maintenance requirements. The manufacturer specifies up to 500,000 charge and discharge cycles.
Supercapacitors are therefore particularly suitable for applications with frequent short or medium-length power failures, voltage drops or fluctuations. During a power failure, the DC2412-UPSDP2 can maintain the supply of 12 VDC devices or provide enough time for an industrial PC to shut down safely.
Compared with the DC2412-UPSD version, the DP2 is intended for applications requiring a larger energy reserve and longer bridging time. For long-term backup in the range of tens of minutes or hours, however, a battery-based UPS is more suitable.

How long will the device keep running during a power failure?
The backup time mainly depends on the power consumption of the connected device. The DC2412-UPSDP2 stores a total energy of 5.1 kJ / 1.4 Wh in its supercapacitors, of which the manufacturer specifies 3.8 kJ / 1.1 Wh as usable energy. The lower the current draw of the connected device, the longer the UPS can maintain the output supply.
The actual backup time is affected by the load, operating temperature and current state of charge of the supercapacitors. If the UPS is intended to allow an industrial PC or another system to shut down safely during a power failure, sufficient time reserve should be maintained rather than using the entire available energy until complete shutdown.
Fast charging and intelligent distribution of available power
The DC2412-UPSDP2 intelligently distributes the available input power between the connected load and charging of the supercapacitors. Powering the connected device has priority, while the remaining power is used to replenish the energy stored in the supercapacitors.
At low load, a larger share of the available power can be used for charging. At higher current draw, more power is used to supply the connected device. This means that the upstream power supply does not need to be sized solely for the maximum charging current of the supercapacitors.
After a power failure, the supercapacitors can be recharged significantly faster than a conventional rechargeable battery.
The available input power is intelligently distributed between the load and charging of the supercapacitors.
The device does not contain a conventional rechargeable battery, reducing the regular maintenance requirements of the backup power system.
UPS status and configuration with UPScom software
The DC2412-UPSDP2 supports UPScom software for Windows and Linux. The RS232 serial interface can be used to monitor the UPS operating status, react to power failures and configure system behavior during a power failure.
The software can work together with a connected industrial PC and enable a controlled shutdown before the energy stored in the supercapacitors is depleted.
- monitoring the UPS operating status,
- signaling an input power failure,
- monitoring the energy storage status,
- configuring the response to a power failure,
- controlling the safe shutdown of the connected PC,
- support for automatic restart after power is restored.

Safe shutdown and automatic restart of the computer
In the event of an input power failure, the DC2412-UPSDP2 can notify the connected PC or another host system and provide enough time for a safe shutdown. Power failure information can be transmitted via RS232 or the Power Fail relay contact.
After the input power is restored, the integrated Reboot function can be used to restart the system once shutdown has been completed. With an industrial PC, this function should also be coordinated with the BIOS and operating system settings.
The DC2412-UPSDP2 also supports host operation without active UPScom software and can be configured so that the output is enabled only after the supercapacitors have reached more than 90% of their capacity.

Power failure and system shutdown control
Practical functions for real-world operation
The DC2412-UPSDP2 can simply bridge a short power failure or, depending on the configuration, work together with the connected system to perform a controlled shutdown. The Reboot function and the option to operate without software also simplify use in standalone industrial installations.
In the event of an input power failure, the information can be transmitted via the relay contact or RS232 interface and used by the higher-level control system.
The UPS can optionally be configured to enable its output only after the supercapacitors have reached more than 90% of their capacity.
The device allows UPS operation on the host system without active UPScom software and also provides an integrated Reboot function.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Bicker DC2412-UPSDP2 DC/DC Converter and Backup Power Supply
DC/DC Conversion and Uninterruptible Power Supply
What is the Bicker DC2412-UPSDP2?
The DC2412-UPSDP2 combines an industrial DC/DC converter and a DC UPS in a single device. It converts an input voltage of 16–32 VDC to an output of 12–11.8 VDC depending on load, at up to 5 A. In the event of an input power failure, it maintains the 12 VDC output using integrated supercapacitors. The maximum output power is 60 W.
Can the DC2412-UPSDP2 convert 24 VDC to 12 VDC?
Yes. The nominal input voltage is 24 VDC, but the device operates over a wide range of 16–32 VDC. The output provides 12–11.8 VDC depending on load, at up to 5 A.
What is the difference between a standard DC/DC converter and the DC2412-UPSDP2?
A standard DC/DC converter only converts one DC voltage level to another. The DC2412-UPSDP2 additionally includes supercapacitor energy storage and UPS control electronics. In the event of a power failure or input voltage drop, it can therefore temporarily maintain the 12 VDC output and allow the connected device to continue operating or shut down safely.
Do I need a separate power supply before the DC2412-UPSDP2?
Yes. The DC2412-UPSDP2 has a DC input and is not designed for direct connection to a 230 VAC mains supply. It requires an external DC power supply in the range of 16–32 VDC, typically 24 VDC. It then converts this voltage to 12 VDC while also providing uninterrupted power to the connected device.
Is the 12 VDC output stable even when the input voltage changes?
Yes. The DC2412-UPSDP2 operates as a DC/DC converter and provides an output of approximately 12–11.8 VDC depending on load throughout the permitted 16–32 VDC input range. The connected 12 VDC device is therefore not directly affected by changes in the 24 VDC supply branch.
Supercapacitors and Backup Time
Why does the DC2412-UPSDP2 use supercapacitors instead of a battery?
Supercapacitors are particularly suitable for frequent short and medium-duration power failures. They recharge quickly, do not require regular battery replacement, and the manufacturer specifies up to 500,000 charge and discharge cycles. For long-term backup lasting tens of minutes or hours, a battery-based UPS is more suitable.
How much energy do the supercapacitors in the DC2412-UPSDP2 store?
The integrated EDLC supercapacitors have a total energy of 5.1 kJ / 1.4 Wh. The manufacturer specifies approximately 3.8 kJ / 1.1 Wh as usable energy for backup operation.
How long will the DC2412-UPSDP2 keep a device running during a power failure?
The backup time mainly depends on the actual output power of the connected device. At lower power consumption, the backup time is significantly longer than at loads close to the maximum 60 W. The manufacturer therefore shows the backup time as a curve depending on output power.
If the UPS is intended to allow an industrial PC or another system to shut down safely, the shutdown must be configured with sufficient reserve before the supercapacitor energy is fully depleted.
Is the DC2412-UPSDP2 suitable for frequent power failures?
Yes. Supercapacitors are particularly well suited to applications with frequent power failures, voltage drops or fluctuations. They withstand a high number of charge and discharge cycles and recharge again after the power supply is restored.
What is the difference between the DC2412-UPSDP2 and DC2412-UPSD?
Both models convert an input voltage of 16–32 VDC to 12 VDC / 5 A and combine a DC/DC converter with a supercapacitor-based UPS. The main difference is the energy reserve. The DC2412-UPSDP2 has supercapacitor storage with a total energy of 5.1 kJ / 1.4 Wh and is intended for applications requiring a longer backup time than the basic DC2412-UPSD version.
Safe Shutdown, Reboot and Power Failure Control
Can the DC2412-UPSDP2 safely shut down an industrial PC during a power failure?
Yes. In the event of a power failure, the DC2412-UPSDP2 can pass Power Fail information to the connected computer and provide enough time to save data and shut down the operating system in a controlled manner. Communication can take place via RS232, or the PBR output can be used to simulate pressing the Power button.
What is the Reboot function on the DC2412-UPSDP2?
The Reboot function allows the connected system to restart automatically after a controlled shutdown once the input power supply is restored. The restart delay can be set to 10, 30 or 60 seconds using the DIP switches, or automatic restart can be disabled.
What is the Power Fail Timer and what is it used for?
The Power Fail Timer determines the time from the beginning of a power failure until the UPS initiates its response. If the input power is restored within the configured time, the connected system may not need to shut down at all. The DIP switches allow settings of 3, 8, 20, 40, 60, 100 or 150 seconds.
What does output enable only above 90% supercapacitor charge mean?
The DC2412-UPSDP2 can be configured so that it only provides output voltage after the supercapacitors have reached more than 90% of their capacity. This prevents the connected system from starting with an almost empty energy store and ensures that sufficient backup energy is available if another power failure occurs.
Can the DC2412-UPSDP2 be used without UPScom software?
Yes. Basic UPS functions can be configured using the internal DIP switches and used without active software on the host system. UPScom is particularly useful for monitoring, communication with a computer and more advanced control.
UPScom, RS232 and Signaling
Can the DC2412-UPSDP2 be configured and monitored using software?
Yes. The DC2412-UPSDP2 supports UPScom software. The RS232 serial interface can be used to monitor the UPS operating status, react to input power failures and control the safe shutdown of the connected computer.
What is the RS232 interface used for?
RS232 is used for communication between the UPS and the connected computer or another host system. It can be used to monitor UPS status, signal a power failure and control a safe system shutdown.
What is the Power Fail relay contact used for?
The relay contact can be used to pass information about a power failure to an external device, such as a PLC, industrial PC or other control electronics. The contact is closed during the Power Fail state.
What does PBR mean on the DC2412-UPSDP2?
PBR is used to simulate pressing the Power button of the connected computer. The signal can be used to initiate a controlled system shutdown without the need to send a software command via RS232. The manufacturer specifies a pulse duration of approximately 200–400 ms.
