One battery assembly with connection. Additional holders, modules or devices are not included in the scope of supply.

Frequently asked questions about PLC backup batteries

What does a backup battery do in a PLC?

In battery-backed PLCs, it retains the contents of selected RAM areas when the main power supply is off. Depending on the CPU design, this covers the program, current data values or operation of the real-time clock. The particular CPU and its configuration determine what is backed up. The battery does not power normal PLC operation or its inputs and outputs.

Does every PLC need a backup battery?

No. Some CPUs retain the program and selected data without a replaceable battery. The memory architecture and exact CPU order number are decisive, rather than the series name alone. Check the documentation and battery compartment of the particular device before ordering.

How often should the battery be replaced?

Follow the preventive replacement interval specified by the manufacturer of the particular PLC. Service life depends on the current drawn by the backed-up circuits, time without main power, temperature and battery age. Record the installation date and include replacement in the maintenance plan. Capacity alone does not determine the number of years in service; there is no universal interval for all PLCs.

How do I recognise a low or faulty battery?

Depending on the CPU type, a fault is indicated by an indicator light, diagnostic message or status available in the programming software. Check the exact meaning of the indication for the device: a missing battery or connection problem may also be the cause. The indication does not reliably show the remaining backup time. First ensure that the data is backed up and resolve the fault before a planned power shutdown.

What happens if I do not replace a depleted battery?

If main power is also lost, the contents of battery-dependent memory areas may be lost or the real-time clock may stop. Depending on the CPU and memory used, the program, current data values or some of them may be lost. Battery depletion alone does not erase non-volatile memory. However, losing current data makes restarting the machine more difficult.

How do winter conditions and low temperatures affect the battery?

As temperature falls, the internal resistance of lithium cells increases and their voltage under load and usable capacity decrease. The actual battery temperature inside the device is decisive. Cold conditions therefore reduce the backup margin, especially for an older battery. Observe the temperature limits of the cell, complete battery assembly and PLC together; a wide temperature range for the cell alone does not mean that the entire device has the same tolerance.

Does high temperature shorten battery life?

Yes. In lithium backup cells, high temperature accelerates self-discharge and affects their ability to supply the required current. When planning maintenance, take account of the temperature inside the control cabinet and the storage conditions for spare batteries. Nominal capacity measured at room temperature does not guarantee the same service life in a hot control cabinet.

Should the battery be changed with the PLC powered on or off?

The manufacturer of the particular CPU specifies the procedure. For some battery-backed PLCs, main power must remain on during replacement to prevent data loss. This procedure cannot be applied to all controllers. Before disconnecting the battery, check the specified power state, CPU mode and machine service conditions.

What should be checked before and after replacement?

Before replacement, check that a usable backup of the program and required data is available, and check the new battery designation, connector and polarity. Record the diagnostic status and prepare the work according to the device service procedure. After replacement, check the battery indication, diagnostics and required CPU state. If the clock or operating values are backed up, check them too. Record the date and type of battery installed in the maintenance log.

Is the same voltage enough when selecting a replacement?

No. Also compare the chemical system, dimensions, capacity required for the specific device, connector, wiring configuration and polarity. A connector that is the same but with a different wiring configuration is not a suitable replacement. Do not replace a battery with a cable connection with a loose cell without verifying the entire design.

Can I determine the remaining service life by measuring voltage?

Open-circuit voltage alone does not determine remaining capacity. In Li-SOCl₂ cells, voltage changes very little through much of the discharge; temperature and load also affect the result. Use device diagnostics and the battery manufacturer’s procedure to assess its condition. An open-circuit measurement does not replace preventive replacement.

How should a spare primary lithium battery be stored?

Store it in its packaging, in a dry and cool place in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Protect the connector and terminals from short-circuiting and check the battery’s markings and age. A primary lithium battery is not rechargeable: do not connect it to a charger, do not short-circuit it and do not solder directly onto the cell body. The required terminals must be of a suitable, ready-made design.
