Frequently asked questions about batteries
What is the purpose of a battery in a robot or servo drive?
Depending on the design of the equipment, it retains the backed-up data from position sensors or the relevant circuits. If this data is lost, the system requires a reference position reset, calibration or further servicing. The battery does not power the motor’s movement. The exact function is determined by the specific robot, drive and its configuration.
How often should the battery be replaced?
Adhere to the preventive replacement interval specified by the manufacturer of the specific equipment. Service life is influenced by the current draw of the circuits being backed up, the duration without mains power, temperature and the age of the battery. Record the date of installation and include the replacement in the maintenance schedule. Capacity figures alone do not determine the number of years of operation; there is no universal replacement interval applicable to all devices.
How do I recognise a low or faulty battery?
Depending on the type of control unit, the fault will be indicated by an indicator light, a diagnostic message or a status displayed in the programming software. Check the exact meaning of the message for the specific device: the cause may also be a missing battery or a connection problem. The message does not reliably indicate the remaining backup time. First ensure that data is backed up and resolve the fault before the planned power cut.
What happens if I do not replace a depleted battery?
If the backup is interrupted, there is a risk of losing battery-dependent data. For systems with an absolute encoder, this means that the position reference must be reset. This does not automatically result in the robot programme being deleted. The recovery procedure is specific to the device; prepare this before a planned shutdown.
How do winter conditions and low temperatures affect the battery?
In lithium cells, internal resistance increases as the temperature drops, and both voltage and usable capacity decrease during discharge. The actual temperature of the battery inside the device is the decisive factor. Cold temperatures therefore limit the backup capacity, particularly in older batteries. At the same time, observe the temperature limits for the cell, the entire battery pack and the device; a wide operating range for the cell itself does not imply the same resilience for the entire device.
Does high temperature shorten battery life?
Yes. In lithium backup cells, high temperature accelerates self-discharge and affects their ability to supply the required current. When planning maintenance, take account of the temperature inside the control cabinet and the storage conditions for spare batteries. Nominal capacity measured at room temperature does not guarantee the same service life in a hot control cabinet.
Is the battery replaced whilst the device is switched on or off?
The procedure is specified by the manufacturer of the specific control unit. For some battery-backed devices, the mains power supply must remain switched on during replacement to prevent data loss. This procedure cannot be applied to all control units. Before disconnecting the battery, check the specified power supply status, the control unit’s operating mode and the machine’s service conditions.
What should be checked before and after replacement?
Before replacement, check the availability of a suitable programme backup and the necessary data, as well as the new battery’s designation, connector and polarity. Record the diagnostic status and prepare the intervention in accordance with the equipment’s service procedure. After replacement, check the battery indicators, diagnostics and the required status of the control unit. If the clock or operating values are backed up, check these as well. Record the date and type of the installed battery in the maintenance log.
Is the same voltage enough when selecting a replacement?
No. Also compare the chemical system, dimensions, capacity required for the specific device, connector, wiring configuration and polarity. A connector that is the same but with a different wiring configuration is not a suitable replacement. Do not replace a battery with a cable connection with a loose cell without verifying the entire design.
Can I determine the remaining service life by measuring voltage?
Open-circuit voltage alone does not determine remaining capacity. In Li-SOCl₂ cells, voltage changes very little through much of the discharge; temperature and load also affect the result. Use device diagnostics and the battery manufacturer’s procedure to assess its condition. An open-circuit measurement does not replace preventive replacement.
How should a spare primary lithium battery be stored?
Store it in its packaging, in a dry and cool place in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Protect the connector and terminals from short-circuiting and check the battery’s markings and age. A primary lithium battery is not rechargeable: do not connect it to a charger, do not short-circuit it and do not solder directly onto the cell body. The required terminals must be of a suitable, ready-made design.
