Frequently asked questions about batteries
What is this battery used for?
In a rechargeable battery, the stored energy is used to power the relevant device. This is not automatically a PLC backup battery. Check the battery’s function and method of use according to the exact type of device.
Is the battery rechargeable?
Check the instructions for use according to the markings on the specific battery pack. Do not connect the battery to the charger without confirming the technology and charging conditions.
How often is replacement recommended?
Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Monitor the battery’s age, runtime per charge, casing condition and diagnostics. For rechargeable batteries, wear and tear also depends on the number of charge cycles and the charging method. There is no universal replacement interval applicable to all configurations.
How can I tell if a battery is worn out or faulty?
Depending on the device, this may manifest as a reduced operating time, an inability to charge properly or a diagnostic message. Do not continue to use a damaged or deformed battery pack; follow the device’s service instructions.
How does the cold affect a battery?
Low temperatures limit the available power and usable capacity. The temperature inside the device and the limits of the entire assembly are decisive. The operating range differs from the charging range; observe both sets of manufacturer’s specifications.
Does high temperature shorten service life?
Higher temperatures accelerate battery ageing. Take into account both operating and storage conditions, and do not leave a spare battery in an overheated area. Adhere to the temperature limits for both the equipment and the battery pack.
Is the battery replaced whilst the device is switched on or off?
Follow the procedure for the specific type of equipment. Before disconnecting the main battery, ensure that the machine and equipment are in the required state. Do not regard replacement whilst the system is live or maintaining operation during replacement as a generally supported function.
What should be checked before and after replacement?
Compare the order number, voltage, technology, dimensions, contacts and mechanical mounting. Check the condition of the equipment and its diagnostics. After replacement, verify correct installation, signalling and operation in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions; record the date of replacement in the maintenance log.
Is the same voltage sufficient for selection?
No. The chemical system, charging conditions, contacts, polarity, mechanical design and equipment requirements must also match. Identical size or voltage alone do not constitute confirmation of a suitable replacement.
How should a spare battery be stored?
Comply with the manufacturer’s specifications regarding temperature, state of charge and storage duration. Protect the contacts from short circuits, moisture and mechanical damage. The storage methods for primary batteries and rechargeable batteries differ.
